Wright Speaks at Last Fri 14th Jul 2000 18:10
Town keeper Richard wright has made his first statement on his contract/transfer situation. The England player said: "I have never said I want to leave this club and hopefully the situation will resolve itself in the future. I'm looking forward to getting back into training. It will be good to be back with the rest of the lads again to prepare for the new season." Of the widespread criticism of his agent Jonathan Barnett Wright said: "People can say what they like. They have their opinions and they are entitled to them." He continued: "People see what they see in a situation." George Burley, currently on holiday, said that he would hope negotiations would start soon with Wright, however as ever Jonathan Barnett has a few words to say on the matter: "Enough has been said for the moment. Richard just wants to get into training and enjoy working with his team-mates again." Wright and Matt Holland both will be back in training on Monday. They were allowed a longer summer break a!
talks to John Scales Wed 05th Jul 2000 17:52
Those Were The Days have been fortunate enough to be one of the first to interview new signing, John Scales. Gavin Wilding called John up on a London-bound train (several times), and he told us how he first heard of interest from Ipswich Town:
Burley weighs up Scales Tue 27th Jun 2000 17:00
George Burley has confirmed interest in the out of contract Spurs defender, John Scales. Scales, 33, could also be lining up alongside Coventry defender Gary Breen. He is seen as surplus to requirements at City, as they have a glut of central defenders with Paul Williams, Colin Hendry, Richard Shaw, Mo Konjic and Breen all competing for the positions. The fee is rumoured to be around the £2million mark for the right-footed 27 year old.
Mullins Link Renewed Mon 26th Jun 2000 12:47
The long-standing link between Town and Palace youngster Hayden Mullins has once again hit the newspapers. The 21-year-old England U21 international has been interesting George Burley for some while with a link going back as far as last summer. The midfielder would cost Town £2.5 million.
Agent Touts Wright Once More Wed 21st Jun 2000 12:54
Jonathan Barnett, the increasingly unpopular with Town fans agent acting for Richard Wright, has said that the Town goalkeeper would be more than happy to speak with Celtic. Barnett, also agent for Kieron Dyer and Matt Holland, said "Celtic are a big club and, if the opportunity came, he would certainly talk to them but it is not something that we have discussed". Barnett added that Wright was happy at Town and that no actual approach had been made by Martin O'Neill's club: "Celtic have not approached Richard and we haven't even discussed it. He is still contracted to Ipswich and intends to see out his contract at Portman Road." Wright has failed to sign an extension to his contract which is up at the end of next season. If he fails to sign an extension Wright will be able to go on a free abroad or, as he will still be under 24, on a reduced fee within the UK. It looks likely that Town will offer Wright for sale if no extension is signed.
Burley at Euro 2000 Mon 12th Jun 2000 10:54
Town manager George Burley has travelled to Holland and Belgium and is said to be watching specific players rather than just looking generally for targets.
Sign Up or Be Sold! Fri 09th Jun 2000 13:08
England and Ipswich keeper Richard Wright has been told to sign up or face being sold. Town have been trying to tie Wright to a long-term deal for two years, but so far he has refused to sign. George Burley said: "If Richard wont't sign his contract he will be put up for sale.... I spoke to him last night and he said he had an open mind. The last thing I want is is for him to leave but we must protect ourselves." Town will want to cash in on the £5 million rated keeper before his contract is up at the end of next season. He will then be able to go abroad on a Bosman or be subject to a tribunal if he signs for a UK club. Town would certainly receive less than his value should this happen.
Fighting Fat Thu 08th Jun 2000 13:04
George Burley has told French centre-half Manu Thetis to lay off the pies and get into shape. Burley has said that Manu was out of shape last season and should sort himself out to get in contention for a place in his side.
That Was The Week This Was Thu 01st Jun 2000 14:39
What a week, eh? One that no Town fan will ever forget. Has it sunk in yet? We are Premier League, we are Premier League.
Stockport 0-1 Town Sun 16th Apr 2000 23:41
Town came to within one point of Manchester City in second after a not entirley convincing victory over Stockport County. Town lined up with John McGreal returning from injury, but the centre-half lasted just 14 minutes before being replaced with Fabian Wilnis, himself substituted with injury late on when he was replaced by Mick Stockwell. Martijn Reuser made his first start for Town on the left of a three man midfield as Town returned to 5-3-2. Like McGreal this didn't last the whole of the first half with 4-4-2 being used in the latter stages and throughout the second. Gary Croft started at right wing back, but moved to left back as Wilnis moved to right back. Jamie Clapham moved to the left of midfield, while the ineffective Reuser moved to the right wing. Town once again lined up without Marcus Stewart, a recurrence of his previous injury was apparently cited on this occasion.
